The mechanics

Six segments, six jobs.

Each five-year block of your retirement is funded separately and invested according to how soon you will spend it. Here is what each one is for.
  1. Pays you now

    Years 1–5

Stable and predictable, not exposed to the market

    3.5% assumed

  2. Pays you next

    Years 6–10

    Short-term bonds and conservative income

    4.5% assumed

  3. Refills Segment 2

    Years 11–15

Balanced — some growth, still defensive

    5.5% assumed

  4. The middle distance

    Years 16–20

    Growth-leaning, with time to recover

    6.5% assumed

  5. Later years

    Years 21–25

Growth — two decades before it is touched

    7.0% assumed

  6. Longevity and legacy

    Years 26–30

    Long-horizon growth and inflation defense

    7.5% assumed

Assumed rates are illustrative and rise with the time horizon because money that will not be spent for decades can accept more volatility. They are not projections and not a guarantee.

Refilling

What happens when a segment runs out

Segment one is spent over its five years. Before it empties, we refill it from segment two, which has been growing in the meantime — and segment two gets refilled from segment three. The refill is a decision, not an automatic sale.

In a good year

We refill early and lock in gains, sometimes extending the runway beyond five years.

In a bad year

We wait. That is the entire point — the near-term income is already there, so nothing has to be sold at a low.

Every year

We look at whether your spending, your taxes, or your life has changed, and adjust the plan rather than the other way around.

The starting scenario

Change one answer and the allocation changes — not just the total. Claiming Social Security at 70 barely moves what the whole plan costs, but it nearly doubles what Segments 1 and 2 have to carry — because you are funding the gap yourself until the checks start. That is why two people with the same savings do not get the same plan.
