Alternative investments, where they fit your plan.

Where alternatives fit in a retirement plan

Alternative investments — private equity, private credit, real assets — are generally suited to money you will not need for a long time. In a segmented income plan, that means the later segments.

What they can add

Returns that do not move in lockstep with public markets, exposure to companies that are not currently publicly traded, and income streams with a different risk profile than a bond fund.

How we decide

We start from the plan. If your near-term segments are funded and your planned income covers the essentials, there may be room in the later segments for alternative investments.
