Who we serve

Defense and tech industry careers come with benefits most employers do not offer.

A pension you elect once. Accounts inherited through decades of mergers. A savings plan with room most employers do not offer. All of it worth more if you know what you are actually holding.

Why defense and tech industry benefits need their own plan

Defense and tech industry careers often carry benefits that have become rare at other employers. A pension you elect once. Accounts picked up through decades of mergers. A savings plan that may let you set aside far more than the usual limit. What you have depends on your employer and your hire date, so that is where the work starts.

A pension, possibly frozen
Whether you have one, and what form it takes, depends on your employer and your hire date. Some are frozen. Ask your plan administrator before you plan around it.
Accounts inherited from mergers
A long career through several mergers can leave benefits at a company that no longer exists. Sometimes at a recordkeeper you have stopped thinking about.
A savings plan with extra room
Some plans let you add after-tax money and convert it inside the plan, well past the normal limit. Not all do. Your plan documents decide, not the industry.
Retiree medical, where it exists
Where it is offered, it changes the math of leaving before 65. Those are usually the most expensive years of an early retirement.

What this complicates

Where the standard advice breaks down

A pension changes what your portfolio has to do

Pension income covers part of what you need every month, for life. So your portfolio has a smaller job to do. Households with a pension often need far less invested than households without one. They can usually afford more growth in the later segments too.

People forget accounts they still own

A common finding after a long career is an old account nobody has looked at in years. Finding it is simple work, but it has to happen before you elect anything.

The once-only elections interact

The form your pension takes. Whether you elect a survivor option. When you claim Social Security. Three decisions, usually made separately by three different people, that add up to one number. Two of them cannot be undone.

Questions

Common questions

It depends on four things: how much lifetime income you already have, whether your spouse needs income after you, your health, and whether you want to leave the money behind. We model both against your real spending. Answering it in the abstract is guesswork.

Your employer, hire date, and service history decide it, and the plan administrator can confirm. Ask for your full benefit statement, including any frozen or legacy accruals. It is the first thing we ask for, because everything else depends on it.

It means putting after-tax money into your workplace plan, past the normal limit, then converting it to Roth inside the plan. Where a plan allows it, that can move a lot into tax-free growth each year. Not every plan does. Confirm yours before counting on it.
